Title: Last of their kind
Author: camshaft22
Rating: R
Pairing(s) (if any): John/Cam
Warnings: N/A
Prompt: 215. John/Cam. Stranded in the wrong galaxy.
No one quite knows why they targeted Colonels Cameron Mitchell and John Sheppard, but when the Remnant came and they first faced them, it was them that their troops targeted. The Remnant, an enemy of Angelic looking beings that only saw Humanity as their next conquest wanted only seemed to want them in particular.
John Sheppard was captured first, the rest of his team dying as they fought to protect him and the Athosians. He was contained, half crazed as he slammed himself against the walls and tried to penetrate his clear cell. The death toll was in the thousands, the Athosians annihilated.
They were the lucky ones.
Cameron Mitchell was on Dakara, chafing as he was hidden, forced off Earth and cut off from the battle. When they arrived in their battleships, he was on the front lines, knowing that this was his entire fault. Everyone who had pledged to protect him were dead in an instant and he was trapped, watching as the Remnant cut a swath through the Jaffa defense and murdered every last one of them, even the children. Cameron raged and fought, completely trapped and unable to free himself.

John woke, looking around the cell as he stalked around, trying to discover where he was. He stopped short, seeing Cam still passed out. John came close and kicked his foot. “Cam! Wake your ass up!”
Cam woke up and started fighting, making John hard pressed to dodge. “God damnit, Cam! Stop it, fucker and listen to me!” John yelled at him as he roared and kept attacking. John ducked low and slammed his elbow into his ribcage. Cam sucked in a breath and looked at him, the mania clearing from his eyes.
“Fuck…” he exhaled. “John? What the hell are you doing here?”
“They captured me too."
"What the hell is going on?”
John hesitated. “We were both captured by the Remnant. Is your shit together now?”
Cam flushed. “My shit is together. Have you been able to look around?”
“Not as much as I’d like, but now that you’re with me, let’s do what we need to do,” John said, completely detached.
Cam nodded, pushing his emotions away and detaching himself from everything by the situation. After searching the cell, they discovered two beds, two trays of food left and they could hear the hum of engines.
“We’re on a ship. Maybe one of their battle cruisers?” John said, touching the wall and feeling a slight vibration.
“It has to be… Maybe their main fleet?” Cam asked. “How long have you been here?”
“I was captured… probably six hours ago?” John said, estimating in his head.
“That would be about the same time… they’ve never coordinated like this before,” Cam told him.
John nodded.
“We both know we’re the ones they wanted… but no one could figure out why. You have any clues?” Cam asked as John shook his head. “I know we’ve both made a name for ourselves, but the entire thing is just insane. How could they attack both galaxies and still have troops to spare? We would’ve seen them!” John agreed silently as Cam kept going. “It’s just weird… There has to be a reason that makes sense.”
“We’ve made ourselves targets,” John told him, lowering his eyes.
“What? Why… How?” Cam asked, confused.
“The Ori, the Wraith… Who’s been in the middle of both of those conflicts?”
Realization slowly dawned on Cam’s face. “Us.”
John nodded. “I figure the only thing we have left to expect is the Remnants to kill us publicly. That’s how I’d handle it.”
“You would not,” Cam told him.
John smiled sharply. “You’re always so nice, Cam.”
Cam frowned at him but let it go. “So, what do you suggest?”
“The usual.”
“Thought so. Don’t get yourself killed, idiot.”
“Same goes for you.”
***
Cam held his head in his hands, trying to make sense of all of this. Food had been beamed in; they had access to bath and toilet facility, and no one, not one person, had checked on them. Cam expected a guard or something!
John tapped his shoulder as a screen lowered down.
“TV?” Cam asked dubiously.
“Maybe it’s the super bowl,” John said dryly.
Cam rolled his eyes and looked at the screen, waiting for whatever it was to begin.
It lit up, showing both Earth and Atlantis. Cam’s stomach sank to the floor. “No,” he whispered, realizing what this was, but unable to look away as the Remnant ships sailed towards both planets.
Time had no meaning, locked away like this but it had been weeks since they last saw their homes. Cam felt the fear crawl up his windpipe, not knowing what they were doing, how they had gotten so close. What happened to their defenses? The Remnant surely had been stopped, right? This wasn’t the last stand, right?
John couldn’t seem to form words as the weapons fired and the towers burst into debris, shards of Atlantis raining down. It had stood for so long, all alone and it only took minutes to break it into pieces. John felt something warm on his face as he started crying, knowing everyone was dead.
Just as Atlantis was shattering, Cam watched as they fired their weapons, burning everything in their path as the Earth went up in flames, only leaving a smoldering planet behind. Cam felt something twist inside his mind as he realized they lost interest in their planet, their people and just destroyed them instead.
“Earthlings. This is your penance,” a voice from above them spoke, breaking the silence since their capture what seemed so long ago now. “A new era will be born as you are left here, in the Andromeda Galaxy.”
Cam and John stared, unable to look away. They were horrified, their minds shattering as they lost everything.
